The Complete Checklist

Packing for safari isn’t like packing for a regular vacation. You’ll be out in the bush, bouncing around in a 4x4, dealing with early mornings and warm days and cool nights. Plus, you'll want to stay comfortable and blend into the environment (no neon gym shorts here).

Here’s a practical guide to what to bring, what to leave behind, and a few things you might not think of but will definitely be glad you packed.

Clothing Essentials

You don’t need a new wardrobe, but you do want neutral, breathable, and practical clothing:

👕 Recommended

• Lightweight, neutral-colored shirts (green, tan, khaki avoid white and bright colors)
• Long-sleeved shirts (for sun and insect protection)
• Comfortable trousers or safari pants
• Shorts or breathable skirts (for warm afternoons)
• Fleece or jacket (it gets cold in the mornings and evenings)
• Light rain jacket (especially Nov–May)

👟 Footwear

• Comfortable closed-toe shoes (sneakers or lightweight hiking shoes)
• Flip-flops or sandals (for around camp)

🎒 Pack light: Soft-sided duffel bags are preferred for safari vehicles and small aircraft.

Accessories & Useful Gear

• Hat with a brim (sun protection is no joke)
• Sunglasses (polarized, if possible)
• Daypack (for game drives and walks)
• Buff or scarf (helps with dust)
• Reusable water bottle

🧣 Pro tip: A bandana or neck gaiter is great for dusty roads.

Toiletries & Health Items

• Sunscreen & lip balm with SPF
• Insect repellent (with DEET or picaridin)
• Basic first-aid kit (plasters, antiseptic, painkillers)
• Prescription medications
• Hand sanitizer & wipes
• Motion sickness tablets (roads can be bumpy)

• Camera + extra batteries/memory cards
• Binoculars (a must for spotting wildlife)

• Headlamp or flashlight (some camps don’t have 24-hour electricity)
