This 5-day itinerary gives you a chance to enjoy the mountain’s beauty, acclimatize well, and achieve the summit with an early morning push.
Begin your trek at the Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Hike through tropical rainforest, spotting unique flora
and possibly colobus monkeys. After 4-5 hours, reach Mandara Hut (2,720 m) for dinner and overnight.
Today, you’ll ascend through the heath and moorland zones. The trail is moderate and offers great views
of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. Reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m) in about 6-7 hours for rest and acclimatization.
Spend the day hiking up to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Hut for acclimatization. Return to Horombo Hut for
the night, preparing your body for the summit push.
Trek across the lunar landscape of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is rocky and
barren. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700 m) for an early dinner and rest before the summit attempt.
Start around midnight for the summit climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Watch the sunrise from Africa’s
highest point! After celebrating, descend to Horombo Hut for lunch, then continue down to Marangu Gate
for your end of trek.
It's possible, but more challenging. The shorter itinerary allows less time to acclimatize, which lowers summit success rates compared to the 6-day version. It’s best for very fit trekkers who are comfortable with altitude.
It’s the only route where you sleep in huts instead of tents. Accommodations are simple dorm-style shelters with bunk beds ideal if you prefer not to camp.
The trail is well-maintained with a steady ascent. You’ll pass through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert. It’s an out-and-back route, meaning you descend the same way you came up.
Packages include park and hut fees, meals during the trek, an experienced guide, porters, a cook, rescue fees, transport and hotel nights before and after the climb.
Climb during the drier seasons: January to early March and June to October. These months offer better trail conditions and clearer views, especially from the summit.
