Nestled at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Materuni offers an ideal escape into nature and local culture. This day trip combines a scenic Materuni Waterfall hike through lush forest and farmlands with an immersive Chagga coffee tour led by local villagers. You'll explore the beauty of the waterfall, learn how coffee is grown and brewed using traditional methods, and enjoy a homemade meal in a peaceful rural setting. It’s a relaxed, hands-on experience that connects you to the land and its people.
7:00 AM – Depart Arusha
Leave the city in the morning and head northeast toward the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive to Materuni takes around 2.5 hours through lush countryside.
9:30 AM – Arrive in Materuni Village
You’ll be greeted by a local Chagga guide who’ll give a short introduction to the village and the plan for the day.
10:00 AM – Guided Hike to Materuni Waterfall
Start your hike through banana plantations, coffee fields, and forested paths. The walk is about 45–60 minutes each way, with stops to learn about the plants and culture along the route.
11:30 AM – Reach Materuni Waterfall
Arrive at the 70-meter-high waterfall cool, misty, and surrounded by jungle. You’ll have time to relax, take photos, and enjoy the view. If you bring swimwear and the weather’s right, you can dip your feet or take a quick swim in the natural pool.
12:30 PM – Hike Back to the Village
Begin the walk back at a comfortable pace, enjoying more of the lush landscape.
1:15 PM – Traditional Chagga Lunch
Enjoy a hot local meal prepared by the community, often featuring dishes like banana stew, rice, beans, and seasonal vegetables.
2:00 PM – Coffee Tour & Ceremony
Dive into the local coffee-making process pick, roast, grind, and brew your own cup of Arabica, all guided by song and tradition. The experience is hands-on, interactive, and full of cultural flavor.
3:30 PM – Free Time / Explore the Village (Optional)
Depending on timing and interest, you can relax a bit more in the village or walk around to see local gardens and homes.
4:00 PM – Depart Materuni
Say your goodbyes and begin the drive back to Arusha.
6:30 PM – Arrive Back in Arusha
Return to your hotel or lodge, wrapping up a full day of nature, culture, and coffee.
The hike is moderate and generally suitable for most fitness levels. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour each way, with some uneven and muddy sections good shoes are recommended.
Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a rain jacket (weather can shift quickly), a reusable water bottle, and a swimsuit if you'd like to take a dip near the waterfall.
Yes! You'll be involved in the entire process picking, roasting, grinding, and brewing all guided by locals using traditional methods. It’s interactive and fun.
While it’s possible, hiring a local guide is highly recommended. They’ll not only help with the trail but also offer insight into Chagga culture, history, and daily life.
Yes, basic toilet facilities are available in the village and near the coffee-making area. They're simple but clean. There are no changing rooms near the waterfall, so plan accordingly.
